Glossary: Full-time Equivalent
Pupil-Teacher Ratio (FTE PTR)
The term "FTE PTR" refers to the Full-time Equivalent Pupil-Teacher Ratio
(FTE PTR).
The Pupil-Teacher
Ratio (PTR) is defined as student enrolment (full-time equivalencies)
divided by the number of teachers (full-time equivalencies*). The result
is the ratio of students to one teacher.
(It is also important
to note that the term Full-time Equivalent Teacher (FTE) encompasses more
than classroom teachers. The term teacher represents all
school-based and district-based educators: classroom teachers, vice
principals, principals, guidance counsellors, special education teachers,
itinerant teachers, education psychologists, speech pathologists and other
specialist teachers. Directors, assistant directors, program specialists
and other district administrative personnel are excluded from this
definition).
*Headcount of full-time teachers, plus part-time teachers according to the
percent of allocated unit. For example, 1 full-time teacher and 3
part-time teachers (i.e. half-time) would be a total of 2.5 FTE teachers.
